AAC in Practice

About the Workshop

Are you  starting work in the disability  sector? New to working with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)? Getting more referrals for clients with little, no speech or speech that’s difficult to understand?

We are pleased to offer the latest iteration of our popular and practical 6-part workshop series for Speech Pathologists who are new to the field of AAC. These workshops are designed to give you confidence, practical strategies, and resources to work with clients with AAC needs and their support teams. The 6-part series will involve face-to-face presentations with video examples, practical activities and take-away activities each week to consolidate learning.

 

Content Outline

  • Week 1: Introduction to the what and why of AAC
  • Week 2: Assessment and feature matching
  • Week 3: AAC trials, goal setting and implementation
  • Week 4: Implementation
  • Week 5: Client groups and specific interventions
  • Week 6: Literacy and AAC, funding and staying up to date.

After completing the workshop series, you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of AAC
  • Identify clients who may benefit from AAC interventions
  • Assess and prescribe AAC
  • Set SMART and family-centered goals for AAC
  • Demonstrate use of key intervention strategies including aided language stimulation and the use of prompts and cues
  • Access professional support network.

Target Audience

  • Speech Pathologists new to working with clients with AAC needs
  • Speech Pathology graduates
  • Speech Pathology students with an interest in the disability sector.

 

This series is run over 6 weeks, every Monday evening (except during 2-week break) from 5pm to 7pm.

 

The dates are: 

  1. Mon 4/10
  2. Mon 11/10
  3. Mon 18/10
  4. Mon 8/11
  5. Mon 15/11
  6. Mon 22/11

 

Registration and ticket price covers attendance for the series of 6 workshops.  

 

 

*Social distancing protocols in line with current government recommendations will be adhered to. If restrictions change outside the control of the participant and the session is cancelled due to COVID, participant will be able to opt for a future session.
