World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
15 June 2020
Monday 15 June, is the United Nations World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which raises awareness about elder abuse. Elder abuse can include physical, sexual, psychological and/or financial mistreatment. It is estimated that one in 20 people in WA experience some form of elder abuse. Seniors have the right to age safely, happily and with dignity and respect. Read the WA Strategy to Respond to the Abuse of Older People (Elder Abuse) 2019-2029.
Developing an understanding of the prevalence and scope of elder abuse in the community is critical to effective prevention strategies. This June, Indigo’s Clinical Governance Committee adopted an Elder Abuse Prevention Guideline to assist with the early recognition and identification of potential or suspected elder abuse.
If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, or has a question about elder abuse, please call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 724 679 or email: rights@advocare.org.au
