Since December 2020, Indigo’s Schools team has been working with students and teachers at O’Connor Education Support Centre in Kalgoorlie, to implement the Country Kids Communicate project.

School staff are receiving supported in-class demonstrations, training, coaching, consultation, and regular goal setting with our Schools Team to develop skills in supporting student communication and participation.

Working in collaboration with school staff and families, the project will run for the whole of Term two and aims to support and enhance student communication and participation in the classroom.

Students are receiving one on one support with one of our experienced Speech Pathologists using a number of different techniques and tools including paper-based boards and communication books and apps.

Trish, Kindergarten Teacher at the O’Connor Education Support Centre in Kalgoorlie said they have already seen the children start to benefit from the program: "With L. losing his words when he gets distressed or having to reorganise what he wants to do. Meltdowns have gone from 20-30 to much less and having extra visual supports have helped him. He now looks for the communication board."

Year Two Teacher, Gleneice says, “I had extremely little knowledge of communication devices such as PODD books, never mind how to use one. Both Ashley and Tanith have been so patient and knowledgeable in guiding my journey towards building my confidence, to help assist my students with their communication needs.

Their rapport with our students has been brilliant, and they have introduced a variety of devices such as Proloquo2Go and LAMP WFL on iPads depending on each students’ individual needs.”
