Indigo + Curtin: Empowering allied health students this August

Aug 28, 2024, 16:18 PM by Matilda Gerrans

Throughout the month of August, Indigo had the pleasure of hosting speech pathology and occupational therapy students from Curtin University at our Nedlands office. These events provided a unique opportunity for students to delve into the world of assistive technology and gain hands-on experience under the guidance of our experienced staff.

Every week, we welcomed first-year occupational therapy students, under the mentorship of our OTs Tammy and Lisa, who guided students on a comprehensive tour of our Experience Centre. From adaptive cutlery and electric beds, to shower stools and wheelchairs, the students were exposed to a wide array of assistive technology used by Indigo's clients. Through interactive case studies and practical demonstrations, the students gained a deeper understanding of how these technologies can significantly improve the quality of life for older Aussies and individuals with disabilities.

During their visit, Curtin speech pathology students were introduced to various augmentative and alternative communication aids (AAC) such as PODD books, Eye Gaze, and iPad communication solutions like Grid 3. Led by our speech pathologists Lucy and Ana, the students were able to interact with these AAC devices and see first-hand how they can enhance communication and be an invaluable tool for their future careers.

In addition to hosting students at our office, Indigo also participated in Curtin's Health Sciences Job Fair, where we had the opportunity to chat with students, particularly those studying OT, speech pathology, and physio. Our team shared insights into the rewarding careers in allied health and the impactful work we do at Indigo, and it was a great opportunity to meet more future allied health professionals.

Joining together with Curtin has been a fantastic opportunity to nurture the next generation of occupational therapists and speech pathologists. We have loved being able to empower students to learn, and hope that they will apply this knowledge to their future careers and clients, and make a positive difference in someone's life - and we look forward to welcoming more students next year!
