What is Assistive Technology - Stephen

26 July 2021

Indigo Occupational Therapist Stephen shares his knowledge and experience with Assistive Technology (AT) and how it creates independence.

Meet Stephen, our fourth year Occupational Therapy (OT) student from Edith Cowan University doing his placement at Indigo.

Family of four, 2 males (one in a wheelchair) and 2 females (one seated in a chair next to male in wheelchair) posing outside with their pet greyhound

Stephen has been interested in OT and assistive technology (AT) his whole life. Specifically, how OT and AT could provide opportunities for people with complex disabilities to live full and independent lives.

“I didn’t realise it when I was younger, but I have always been surrounded by AT. Mum has used all sorts of AT, including an Eschenbach Illuminated Magnifier, or equivalent, every day for years to help her with her Stargardt’s disease (vision impairment). She uses her magnifier for everything: from reading bills at home to independently shopping for groceries. Also, Dad has been experiencing locked-in syndrome for the past 21 years due to a stroke, and AT has enabled Dad to communicate and stay connected to his friends and family through using a switch-adapted laptop as an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device.”

If you have any questions regarding AT and how Indigo can help you keep your independence, contact our friendly Customer Service team (08) 9381 0600, visit Australia’s National Equipment Database (NED) at www.askned.com.au and our website www.indigosolutions.org.au
